Most "start here" lists for BTS are the singles in the order they came out, which is the one order that does not work. The 2013 songs are a different group with a different sound, and starting there tells you almost nothing about why anybody is still here thirteen years later.
This list is ordered by what each song does to a person who has never heard the band. It opens with the ones that need no context at all, moves into the ones that made people stay, and ends somewhere you can decide for yourself which direction to go next. Play it top to bottom once. That is the whole ask.

The song ARMY vote for above every other. A slow, aching thing about missing someone who is not coming back; it charted in Korea for over a hundred consecutive weeks and has never really left. If this one lands, you are going to be fine.

Summer, gloss, and a bassline that does most of the work. Nothing here is deep and nothing is trying to be — it held number one in the US for ten weeks in 2021 on pure charm.

The 2017 single that broke them internationally. A whistle hook, a huge chorus, and the first time the group sounded like a stadium act rather than a very good boy band.

If most of that worked, the next step is an album rather than another playlist. The Most Beautiful Moment in Life: Young Forever (2016) is the compilation that collects their best run; Love Yourself: Tear (2018) is the strongest single album; ARIRANG (2026) is where they are now.

- Do I need to listen to BTS albums in order?
- No. The 2013–2014 releases are a different-sounding group and starting there puts most people off. Start with the songs above, then go to a full album once you know which direction you like.
- How many songs do BTS have?
- Around 250 including group releases, Japanese versions, mixtapes and the seven members' solo albums. Nobody starts with all of them, which is what this page is for.
